Kuksa or Wooden Cup - What is it?

Kuksa, also known as a wooden cup, is more than just a traditional drinking vessel – it is a piece of history and craftsmanship.

What is a kuksa or wooden cup?

The traditional kuksa, still in use today, is carved from a single piece of wood – usually birch – and is designed to be both sturdy and functional.

The term kuksa may be derived from Old Swedish or older Scandinavian dialects. Some theories suggest that the word is related to the Old Norse “kál”, which also means a vessel, indicating a long tradition.

The term kuksa is known around the Baltic Sea, but its exact origin is still a mystery. There are theories that link the word to Slavic and Baltic languages, such as the Lithuanian word “kausas” for drinking vessel. In Finnish, the word “guksi” is common, especially in Sami culture.

Tradition and use

In northern Sweden, where we still make kuksa according to the old tradition, the kuksa cup is a practical companion on many occasions. Traditionally, it was used by Nordic cultures as a drinking vessel in everyday life.

Kuksa was not only used for water or tea, but could also serve as a practical ladle. The handle and ergonomic shape made it possible to carry it on your belt, whether you were hiking in the wilderness or relaxing by the campfire. In the past, the kuksa or wooden cup also had a cultural and symbolic meaning.

Spread in the Baltics and Central Europe

Similar wooden vessels can be found in the Baltic countries, such as Latvia and Lithuania, where they are called kūka. They were often made of oak or beech wood and had a similar function as in the Nordic countries, both for everyday use and on festive occasions.

In Central Europe, especially in the Alpine regions and in parts of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, there are wooden mugs called kupa or hunter’s cups, which resemble Nordic traditions. In Sweden and Denmark, they were often decorated with ornaments and could serve as status symbols during the Renaissance.
